From July 25 to August 8, the world’s finest musicians will gather in Ottawa for two weeks of superb music-making beginning with an outstanding opening benefit concert featuring Grammy and Juno award winner James Ehnes and Jon Kimura Parker. World premieres, eighteen celebrated pianists and more than a dozen string quartets will be showcased in over 90 concerts and events. The festival closes with a dazzling benefit concert starring Donna Brown, the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Ying Quartet.

Inspired in part by Maurizio Kagel’s Eine Brise, A Musical Breeze is an outdoor musical event in which you will listen to chamber music while also contributing to its creation…and all of this while you ride your bicycle (or walk the route)! Presented as part of the Rideau Canal Festival Bicycle Parade, participants encounter a series of mini concerts and observe posted instructions such as “ring bell for 8 seconds” or “sing a high pitch”. A musical experience for participants of all ages, this project encourages active participation in music-making and shows us how to listen to our surroundings differently while also being an active part of Ottawa’s soundscape!

Celebrating the historic collaboration between two great Ottawa Festivals, the Rideau Canal and Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Chamberfest ’09 artists will animate the annual Festival Flotilla which features dozens of boats elaborately decorated to celebrate the Rideau Canal Festival’s heritage theme. Festival-goers will be captivated by brass musicians performing from flotilla boats, on the shore, on the bridges above, and throughout the surrounding areas creating a once-in–a–lifetime sound installation under the direction of Kelly-Marie Murphy.
