Studio Sparks – Shanghai Quartet

Each day during the first week of the Festival, you are invited to join host Eric
Friesen for 30 minutes of music and conversation featuring short performances
by Festival artists. These will be heard live across Canada on CBC Radio 2.

Distinguished actor Colin Fox joins the Gryphon Trio to explore the influence
that composers have on each other’s work with a reading of correspondence between
Dvorák and Brahms in the context of
piano trios by these two giants of European romanticism.
Young People’s Concert: Rythmo-Synchro
2 p.m.
All Saints Anglican Church
An exciting overview of the history of percussion instruments. This
narrated concert will introduce children to the cultures of the Middle
East, Europe and America. Influences from African and Brazilian music
to hip-hop will be explored, and instruments such as the kalungu,
djembé, derbouka, tambourin, cymbals and the apito will be explained
and played.
Master Class with André Laplante
4 p.m.
Freiman Hall, University of Ottawa
Join renowned pianist André Laplante in a master class with
some of his own students and talented young pianists from the Ottawa area.

Trios by Schubert, Schoenberg and the
Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor arranged for string
quintet by Anssi Karttunen.

Schoenberg: Opening Gala Concert in conjunction
with the international symposium Schoenberg’s
Chamber Music, Schoenberg’s World

Christ Church Cathedral
This gala is the first of four concerts presented in the Festival in conjunction with
the international symposium Schoenberg’s Chamber Music, Schoenberg’s
World, hosted by Carleton University. Arnold Schoenberg’s sons, Lawrence and
Ronald, and his daughter, Nuria, will be joining leading Schoenberg scholars
from around the world at these concerts.

A concert featuring works by Purcell, Debussy,
Brahms, and a premiere of a work by Canadian composer
Robert Rival.
Mei Han and Randy Raine-Reusch
8 p.m.
Canadian Museum of Civilization Theatre
Zheng master Mei Han joins composer and multi-instrumentalist Randy Raine-
Reusch in an innovative program of traditional and contemporary works. Their
collaborations on Distant Wind for zheng duet, and
Road to Kashgar with the Orchid Ensemble were nominated for
Juno Awards (Best Global).
Beethoven String Quartets II

Dominion-Chalmers United Church
The second in series of six Pass-Plus concerts, presenting all of Beethoven’s
seventeen string quartets.
Late Night Cello
11 p.m.
Church of St. John the Evangelist
Solo cello recital with commentary by the winner of 2006 Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition.
