Studio Sparks – Shanghai Quartet

Each day during the first week of the Festival, you are invited to join host Eric Friesen for 30 minutes of music and conversation featuring short performances by Festival artists. These will be heard live across Canada on CBC Radio 2. Please check the website or programme book for details.

Brahms and Dvorák: Giants of music, letters of friends

Distinguished actor Colin Fox joins the Gryphon Trio to explore the influence that composers have on each other’s work with a reading of correspondence between Dvorák and Brahms in the context of piano trios by these two giants of European romanticism.

An exciting overview of the history of percussion instruments. This narrated concert will introduce children to the cultures of the Middle East, Europe and America. Influences from African and Brazilian music to hip-hop will be explored, and instruments such as the kalungu, djembé, derbouka, tambourin, cymbals and the apito will be explained and played.
Master Class with André Laplante

Join renowned pianist André Laplante in a master class with some of his own students and talented young pianists from the Ottawa area.

This gala is the first of four concerts presented in the Festival in conjunction with the international symposium Schoenberg’s Chamber Music, Schoenberg’s World, hosted by Carleton University. Arnold Schoenberg’s sons, Lawrence and Ronald, and his daughter, Nuria, will be joining leading Schoenberg scholars from around the world at these concerts.

Zheng master Mei Han joins composer and multi-instrumentalist Randy Raine- Reusch in an innovative program of traditional and contemporary works. Their collaborations on Distant Wind for zheng duet, and Road to Kashgar with the Orchid Ensemble were nominated for Juno Awards (Best Global).
