Joel Quarrington

double bass
Joel Quarrington, acclaimed as Canada’s foremost double bassist and one of the world’s leading players, has been principal double bass of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 2006. He previously led the bass sections of the Hamilton Philharmonic, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and Toronto Symphony (1991-2006). He has played concertos with many Canadian orchestras and made solo appearances in Canada, the United States, Europe and China. As chamber musician, he has performed at festivals throughout North America, and collaborated with leading string quartets including the Orford, Vermeer, Cleveland, Colorado, St. Lawrence, Allegri and Tokyo quartets. He founded the Amadeus Ensemble, a Toronto string orchestra, in 1984, was a member of the Chamber Players of Toronto and of Via Salzburg, and toured with New York’s Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He teaches at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory and has given master classes at the Curtis Institute and London’s Royal Academy, among others. He plays a bass made in 1630 by Brescian master Giovanni Paolo Maggini.

Contrebassiste le plus en vue au Canada et de premier rang dans le monde, Joel Quarrington est contrebasse solo de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 2006. Il dirigea auparavant la section des basses de différents orchestres (Hamilton Philhamornic, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, Toronto Symphony (1991- 2006). Il a joué des concertos avec plusieurs orchestres canadiens et il s’est produit en solo au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe et en Chine. Comme chambriste, il s’est produit dans des festivals à travers l’Amérique du Nord, et avec des quatuors à cordes comme Orford, Vermeer, Cleveland, Colorado, St. Lawrence, Allegri et Tokyo. Il a fondé l’ensemble Amadeus, un orchestre à cordes de Toronto (1984), fut membre des Chamber Players of Toronto et de Via Salzburg, et fi t une tournée avec la Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Il enseigne au Conservatoire royal de Toronto et a donné des classes de maître à l’Institut Curtis et au Conservatoire royal de Londres. Il joue avec une contrebasse fabriquée en 1630 par Giovanni Paolo Maggini.
Quartetto Gelato
Quartetto Gelato thrills audiences with the mastery of seven instruments plus a brilliant operatic tenor in repertoire including classical masterworks, operatic arias, tango, gypsy music and folk songs. The 2007-2008 seasons featured over 90 concerts in recital, with orchestras and choirs throughout the United States and Canada. On New Year’s 2007 the group’s first DVD, Quartetto Gelato: A Concert in Wine Country was broadcast by PBS throughout the United States, and a new 2007 Christmas program, O Holy Night! premiered with great success. Other highlights include sold-out concerts with Orchestre symphonique de Québec, appearances at Toronto’s Luminato Festival, and a project, 4x4, with the Binghamton String Quartet. Upcoming are major chamber music festivals, a second Mexico tour and the release of the group’s sixth CD, Mucho Latino, in the fall. An ambitious project, Magic on the Orient Express, is underway. In 1997, Quartetto Gelato (the group’s debut CD) and Rustic Chivalry were literally heard around the world with Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk on board space shuttle Columbia. The ensemble’s members are Peter DeSotto – tenor, violin, mandolin, Alexander Sevastian – accordion, piano, bandoneon, Kornel Wolak – clarinet, and Carina Reeves – cello.
Quartetto Gelato
Quartetto Gelato ravit le public de partout. Alliant maîtrise de sept instruments à un excellent ténor, il offre un répertoire comprenant chefs d’oeuvre classiques, airs d’opéra, tango, music tzigane et folklore. Les deux saisons dernières, l’ensemble a joué plus de 90 fois en récital, avec orchestres et avec choeurs partout aux Etats-Unis et au Canada. Le premier janvier 2007, le réseau américain PBS diffusait leur premier DVD, Quartetto Gelato: A Concert in Wine Country. Une nouvelle émission de Noël, O Holy Hight! a connu un vif succès. L’an dernier, il y a eu des concerts à guichets fermés avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec, une participation au festival Luminato de Toronto et 4x4, un projet avec le quatuor à cordes Binghamton. D’ici peu, l’ensemble participera à de nombreux festivals de musique de chambre, entreprendra une deuxième tournée mexicaine et lancera son sixième CD, Mucho Latino, cet automne. Un ambitieux projet, Magic on the Orient Express, est en préparation. Quatuor Bozzini
The Quatuor Bozzini (violinists Clemens Merkel and Nadia Francavilla, violist Stéphanie Bozzini and cellist Isabelle Bozzini) moves freely between avant-garde and traditional concerts, exploring new, contemporary, experimental and classical repertoire. Enjoying collaborating with composers, the group has premiered many works of diverse artists such as Christian Wolff, Michael Oesterle, Jean Lesage, Chiyoko Slavnics and Linda Smith. Quatuor Bozzini presents a concert series in Montreal and, since 2005, also the Composer’s Kitchen, an annual workshop for composers and up-and-coming musicians. The quartet has appeared across North America, regularly tours in Europe, and is often heard on radio in Canada and abroad. The 2007-08 season included a Canadian tour, two European tours and a debut in the Music Toronto series. Next season takes the quartet to the United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Austria, Sweden, San Francisco and Toronto. Quatuor Bozzini won the Conseil québécois de la musique’s Opus Prize for Discovery of the year in 2001, and in 2004-05, Recording of the year for Portrait Montréal. Recent recordings include Jo Kondo and Howard Skempton quartets, and James Tenney’s complete string quartets and quintets.
Quatuor Bozzini
Le Quatuor Bozzini (Clemens Merkel et Nadia Francavilla, violonistes, Stéphanie Bozzini, altiste et Isabelle Bozzini, violoncelliste) vogue librement entre l’événement d’avant-garde et le concert traditionnel, explorant les répertoires actuel, contemporain, expérimental et classique. Affectionnant les collaborations avec des compositeurs, le groupe crée les oeuvres d’artistes tels Christian Wolff, Michael Oesterle, Jean Lesage, et Linda Smith. Le quatuor présente une série à Montréal et, à chaque année depuis 2005, le Composer’s Kitchen, un atelier pour compositeurs et musiciens de la relève. L’ensemble s’est produit partout en Amérique du Nord, fait régulièrement des tournées européennes et est souvent entendu sur les ondes de CBC/Radio-Canada et ailleurs. En 2007-08, le quatuor a offert une tournée canadienne et deux tournées européennes et inauguré une série torontoise. L’an prochain, l’ensemble visitera le Royaume-Uni, les Pays-Bas, la France, l’Autriche, la Suède, San Francisco et Toronto. Lauréat de deux Prix Opus du Conseil québécois de la musique, (Découverte de l’année en 2001 et Disque de l’année 2004-05), l’ensemble a récemment enregistré les quatuors de Jo Kondo et de Howard Skempton ainsi que l’intégrale des quatuors et quintettes de James Tenney.
