Aki Takahashi
–
vocalist
Aki Takahashi was born in a small fishing village in Japan. She studied art at school and then worked for a company in Kyoto creating kimono designs. While living in Kyoto, she took up studying folk singing and shamisen (Japanese plucked lute). She began performing on the street with jugglers and other entertainers. Later, she came to meet other musicians who shared her interest in combining traditional instruments with new ideas. She is now a core member of Canada’s pre-eminent taiko (Japanese drum) group, the Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble based in Toronto. In addition to performing with many artists from diverse traditions, she creates her own, original compositions and has produced music for both fi lm and the stage.
Aki Takahashi – chanteuse
Aki Takahashi est née dans un petit village de pêche au Japon. Après ses études en arts visuels, elle a travaillé pour une entreprise à Kyoto dans la conception de kimonos. En plus de s’exécuter avec plusieurs artistes de diverses traditions, elle crée ses propres compositions et produit de la musique pour le théâtre et le cinéma.
Allessandro Taverna – piano
Allessandro Taverna studied at the Santa Cecilia Music Academy (Portogruaro, Italy), graduated cum laude from Padua’s Pollini Conservatory and then studied with Piero Rattalino obtaining the fi nal diploma at the Portogruaro Music School for Advanced Studies. He has won many prizes at national and international competitions including the 19th Venice National Piano Competition (the Alfredo Casella special prize), the 2003 Scriabin International Piano Competition (Grosseto, Italy), and the 2006 Concerts in Villa (Vicenza, Italy). He was a semifi nalist in the 6th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (Japan), and at the 2008 UNISA International Piano Competition (Pretoria, South Africa). He has performed widely in recital and as soloist with orchestras in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, including at the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Italian Cultural Institute in London, the 69th Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence), and Switzerland’s Semaines Musicales in Crans- Montana. He studies with Leonid Margarius, Franco Scala and Louis Lortie at Italy’s renowned piano institute in Imola.
Allessandro Taverna – piano
Alessandro Taverno a étudié à l’Académie de musique Santa Cecilia (Portogruaro, Italie), a obtenu son diplôme cum laude du Conservatoire Pollini de Pádua, puis a étudié avec Piero Rattlino avant d’obtenir le diplôme terminal de l’École des études supérieures en musique de Portogruaro. Il a remporté plusieurs prix lors de compétitions nationales et internationales, dont celui du 19e Concours national de piano de Venise (prix spécial Alfredo Casella), du Concours international de piano Scriabin (2003, Grosseto, Italie) et des Concerts in Villa (2006, Vicenza, Italie). Il fut demi-fi naliste au 6e concours international de piano Hamamatsu (Japon), et au Concours international de piano UNISA (2008, Pretoria, Afrique du Sud). Il joua en récital et comme soliste avec des orchestres en Italie et ailleurs : Konzerthaus (Berlin), Institut culturel Italien (Londres), Semaines musicales suisses (Crans-Montana), 69e Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence]). Theatre of Early Music
Founded in 2001 and based in Montreal, the Theatre of Early Music (TEM) is an ensemble that brings together some of the world’s fi nest musicians who share a particular passion for early music. Its formation is the result of the search by instrumentalists and singers for opportunities that would allow devotion and dedication to enter into the creative process. TEM’s core consists primarily of young musicians whose distinctive style, coupled with Daniel Taylor’s expertise and enthusiasm, leads to captivating readings of magnifi cent but often neglected works. Critics have praised TEM’s concerts and recordings. Deutsche Grammophon has written: “…the beauty of these performances bows to no other...the most honest and fearless interpretations of this repertoire to come out of Canada in as long as one can remember...under Daniel Taylor’s profound direction, the sky is the limit.” The TEM’s work most recently has included productions with an 18-voice choir conducted by Daniel Taylor. Appearing worldwide in more than 40 concerts each season, in 2008-2009, TEM will perform in Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Columbia, the United States, Germany, England and across Canada.
Theatre of Early Music

Geoffrey Thompson – trumpet
Geoff Thompson is a native of Stratford, Ontario where he received his early musical education as a pianist. Playing the trumpet in jazz and rock bands led to an interest in symphonic music. After studying at the University of Toronto, in Banff and Munich, he became principal trumpet of Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax and then, since 1994, holds the same position in the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. He has performed as soloist with the OSQ and other Canadian ensembles. He also teaches at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and at the Domaine Forget Académie de musique et de danse.
Geoffrey Thompson – trompette
Originaire de Stratford, Ontario, Geoff Thompson a commencé des études de musique en piano dès son plus jeune âge. Son intérêt pour le jazz et le rock l’amena à la musique symphonique. Après sa formation à l’Université de Toronto, à Banff et à Munich, il obtient le poste de trompette solo avec Symphony Nova Scotia à Halifax, et ensuite à Québec ou il joue au sein de l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec depuis 1994. Il s’est produit comme soliste avec cet orchestre et d’autres formations canadiennes. Il enseigne également au Conservatoire de musique de Québec et à l’Académie de musique et de danse du Domaine Forget.
Tokai String Quartet
The Tokai String Quartet (violinists Amanda Goodburn and Csaba Koczo, violist Yosef Tamir-Smirnoff and cellist Rafael Hoekman) was a prizewinner at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the fi rst Canadian group to do so since 1992. Founded in 2002, while three members were students at the University of Toronto, and mentored by Lorand Fenyves and members of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Quartet also studied, among others, with the Emerson, Ying, Orion, and Leipzig quartets, with Scott St. John and Henk Guittart of the Schoenberg Quartet, and Mayumi Seiler. The Quartet has given master classes at the University of Toronto and been ensemble-in-residence at the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute and Music at Port Milford. Awards include the 2003 Felix Galimir and 2004 Sir Ernest MacMillan Memorial Foundation awards, a debut concert presented by the Frederick Gaviller Music Foundation (2005), and a 2007 Atlantic Canada concert tour under auspices of Debut Atlantic. The Quartet’s Snow Queen projects (with actor Alon Nashman), supported by an Ontario Arts Council grant, was nominated for a Dora award and presented for the second time in 2007/08.
Quatuor à cordes Tokai

Colin Traquair – trombone
Colin Traquair began playing the trombone at the age of eight. He studied at the University of Northern Colorado and received his master’s degree from Northwestern University where he worked with Frank Crisafulli. He also studied with Christhard Gossling, principal trombone of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been second trombone of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 1989 and has performed with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia. He is a founding member of Capital BrassWorks, an ensemble that presents a concert series in Ottawa every season. He is also a Yamaha performing artist.
Colin Traquair – trombone
Colin Traquair a commencé à jouer du trombone à l’âge de huit ans. Il a étudié à l’Université du Northern Colorado et a obtenu une maîtrise à l’Université Northwestern, où il a été l’élève de Frank Crisafulli. Il s’est aussi perfectionné auprès de Christhard Gossling, trombone solo de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin. Deuxième trombone de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 1989, il a aussi joué avec les orchestres symphoniques de Montréal et de Toronto, et Symphony Nova Scotia. Membre de Capital BrassWorks depuis sa fondation, il présente avec celui-ci une série de concerts réguliers à Ottawa. Colin Traquair est également artiste rattaché à la maison Yamaha.
Trio Hochelaga
Founded in 2000, Trio Hochelaga, bearing Montreal’s original Iroquois name, has rapidly established itself as one of Canada’s foremost ensembles. Violinist Anne Robert, cellist Paul Marleyn and pianist Stéphane Lemelin share a passion for repertoire ranging from the Classical to contemporary chamber music. Their repertoire includes the trio literature’s great works with special emphasis on French music and particularly its lesserknown treasures. From the outset, the Trio has participated in major summer festivals in eastern Canada, including the Festival of the Sound, and the Agassiz, Prince Edward County, Orford and Ottawa festivals. In 2003, the Trio premiered Jacques Hétu’s Triple Concerto with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at the Lanaudière Festival. A highlight of the Trio’s 2004 tour in Taiwan and Japan was a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at Tokyo’s Sumida Triphony Hall. The Trio’s acclaimed recordings include Arensky, Fauré, Pierné, Ropartz, Rhené- Baton.and Dubois. The Trio presents concert series in Montreal and Ottawa, and receives annual career development grants from the Canada Council and Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
Trio Hochelaga
Fondé en 2000, le Trio Hochelaga s’est rapidement distingué sur la scène canadienne de musique de chambre. La violoniste Anne Robert, le violoncelliste Paul Marleyn et le pianiste Stéphane Lemelin partagent leur passion pour un répertoire allant de l’époque classique à la musique d’aujourd’hui. Ils accordent une place particulière à la musique française. Le Trio Hochelaga a participé aux principaux festivals d’été de l’est du Canada, dont le Festival of the Sound, et ceux d’Agassiz, Prince Edward County, Orford et Ottawa. En 2003, le Trio Hochelaga a interprété en première le Triple Concerto de Jacques Hétu, avec l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal au Festival de Lanaudière. Le Triple Concerto de Beethoven fut le point culminant de la tournée 2004 du trio à Taiwan et à Tokyo. True North Brass
True North Brass is celebrating its 11th season with a solid reputation as one of the world’s fi nest brass ensembles. Five top Canadian brass soloists form the Toronto-based group: Richard Sandals and Raymond Tizzard - trumpets, Alastair Kay - trombone, Joan Watson - horn, and Scott Irvine - tuba. Scott Irvine and Alastair Kay are also the outstanding composers/ arrangers who create the quintet’s unique programming. Featured at the 2000 International Brass Symposium in Atlanta GA, the quintet performed to great acclaim at the 2008 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Banff AB. On Prime Minister Chrétien’s 1998 trade mission to China, they performed in Beijing and Wuhan and gave master classes at Beijing Conservatory. The quintet has toured extensively across Canada and the United States. Recent performances include Pittsburgh, Boise ID, the Festival of the Sound, and Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre. In 2008-09, the quintet will be artists-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario. The quintet has been featured on CBC TV, is often heard on CBC Radio, has released four critically acclaimed CDs, and has collaborated on recordings with, among others, the Elmer Iseler Singers.
True North Brass
Reconnu comme l’un des meilleurs ensembles de cuivres au monde, True North Brass célèbre sa 11e saison. Cinq solistes canadiens, vedettes des cuivres, forment ce groupe de Toronto : Richard Sandals et Raymond Tizzard (trompettes), Alastair Kay (trombone), Joan Watson (cor), et Scott Irvine (tuba). Scott Irvine et Alastair Kay sont aussi des compositeurs/arrangeurs inégalés et créèrent le programme exceptionnel du quintette. Alexander Tselyakov – piano
Recognized as one of Canada’s most outstanding musicians and internationally renowned, Alexander Tselyakov has performed as guest soloist with eminent orchestras and as a recitalist in the world’s landmark concert halls including New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Rotterdam’s Centre de Doelen, and St. Petersburg’s Shostakovich Philharmonic Hall. The winner of major prizes at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Tokyo International Piano Competition, he has been hailed as representing the best of Russian pianism and effectively synthesizing the emotional balance of Arthur Rubenstein and the more highly strung febrile quality of Horowitz. A busy concert pianist, teacher and chamber musician, Tselyakov collaborates with many leading Canadian musicians. He is artistic director of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival in Manitoba and Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival in British Columbia. He resides in Manitoba, where he is Professor of Piano at the Brandon University School of Music.
Alexander Tselyakov – piano

Lauréat de prix prestigieux au Concours international Tchaïkovski et au Concours pour piano international de Tokyo, il fut salué comme le représentant de l’art pianistique russe par excellence, alliant à l’équilibre émotif d’Arthur Rubenstein la touche plus fi évreuse d’Horowitz. Pianiste de concert très affairé, professeur et chambriste, Alexander Tselyakov collabore avec plusieurs musiciens canadiens de premier rang. Il est directeur artistique du Festival de musique de chambre Clear Lake (Manitoba) et du Festival de musique de chambre de Pender Harbour (Colombie Britannique). Il demeure au Manitoba, où il est professeur de piano à l’École de musique de l’Université Brandon.
Andrew Tunis – piano
Praised for his communicative and inspired performances, Andrew Tunis has given concerts in North America, Europe, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. He has appeared as a guest soloist with many Canadian orchestras. As chamber musician, he has collaborated with outstanding musicians and ensembles such as violinists Pinchas Zukerman and Martin Beaver, cellists Desmond Hoebig and Steven Isserlis, the Philharmonia Quartet of Berlin and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. After studies at the University of Ottawa with Jean-Paul Sévilla and Douglas Voice, he studied with Artur Balsam at the Manhattan School of Music where he received the Pablo Casals Award for outstanding musical achievement. He won fi rst prize in several national and international competitions, including the CBC Young Performers Competition, and with cellist Desmond Hoebig won fi rst prize at the 1984 Munich International Competition. He has released several highly acclaimed chamber music recordings. Andrew Tunis is Professor of Piano at the University of Ottawa.

Tutti Muzik Trio
The Tutti Muzik Trio, (Kerson Leong - violin, Stanley Leong - cello, and Hayes Lao – piano), gave its fi rst public performance in 2001 when Kerson and Stanley were respectively four and six years old. Their mother, Tu Mach, created the trio and fi lled in as a trio member intending to eventually develop a young pianist who could take on that role. Hayes, a former student of Tu and cousin of Kerson and Stanley, has recently joined the Trio. The Trio has been invited to perform at many notable venues and events including the CBC Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, National Arts Centre Fourth Stage, Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Kiwanis Highlights Concert at Ottawa’s Centrepointe Theatre, CHEO telethon, Young String Performers Foundation annual fundraising concerts at the National Library and Archives, at the Houses of Parliament and Supreme Court of Canada, and the residences of many ambassadors in Ottawa. The Trio also shares its music regularly with the elderly at retirement homes and the sick at hospitals, as well as at church services.
Tutti Muzik Trio
Le Trio Tutti Muzik, (Kerson Leong - violon, Stanley Leong - violoncelle, Hayes Lao - piano) a donné sa première prestation en 2001, Kerson et Stanley alors âgés 4 et 6 ans. Tu Mach, mère de Kerson et Stanley, fonda le Trio et occupa temporairement le rôle de pianiste afi n de léguer ce rôle à un jeune élève émérite. Hayes, cousin des frères Leong et Stanley et également élève de Tu, s’est récemment joint au trio. Le Trio s’est fait entendre dans plusieurs lieux et évènements prestigieux dont le Studio Glenn Gould de la CBC (Toronto), la quatrième salle du Centre national des Arts, le Centre des Arts de la scène de Oakville, le concert gala Kiwanis au Théâtre Centrepointe, le téléthon du CHEO, le concert bénéfi ce annuel de la fondation Young String Performers à la salle de la Bibliothèque et Archives nationales, au Parlement du Canada, à la Cour suprême, et aux résidences de plusieurs ambassadeurs à Ottawa. Ils sont également toujours disponibles pour partager leur musique avec les personnes âgées et malades et lors de cérémonies religieuses.
