Steven van Gulik
–
trumpet
Steven van Gulik began playing the cornet at age eight, studying with his uncle Kenneth Moore and performing with the local Salvation Army church band. Having competed successfully at many regional, provincial and national music competitions, he studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and McGill University. An active chamber musician, he has performed at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival since 1994, and also regularly performs in the Ottawa and Montreal regions. He has been heard on CBC/Radio-Canada as recital soloist and chamber musician and on stage with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. He has served as principal trumpet with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and as guest principal trumpet with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with the Thunder Bay Symphony, Ottawa Symphony and National Arts Centre orchestras. After eight years as a member of the trumpet section of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, he joined the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2007.
Steven van Gulik – trompette
À l’âge de huit ans, Steven van Gulik prenait ses premières leçons de cornet, sous la direction de son oncle Kenneth Moore, et commençait à jouer dans l’ensemble local de l’Armée du Salut. Lauréat de nombreux concours de musique régionaux, provinciaux et nationaux, il a étudié à la Interlochen Arts Academy et à l’Université McGill. Féru de musique de chambre, il joue au Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa depuis 1994, et dans les régions d’Ottawa et de Montréal. On peut l’entendre sur les ondes de CBC/ Radio-Canada comme soliste et chambriste, et sur scène avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Il a été trompette solo de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa et trompette solo invité de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts. Il a aussi joué comme soliste avec l’OCNA et les orchestres symphoniques d’Ottawa et de Thunder Bay. Après huit ans au sein de la section de trompettes de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, il s’est joint à l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg en 2007.
Vienna Piano Trio
The Vienna Piano Trio, founded in 1988, is one of the world’s leading piano trios. The Trio won numerous prizes, studied with distinguished musicians and ensembles, and performed for several years in the Vienna Muzikverein’s Jeunesse series. Since 2006/07, the Trio presents its own concert series at the Wiener Konzerthaus. The Trio has appeared in Europe and North America’s major concert venues including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall and New York’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Participating regularly in Europe’s leading music festivals, the Trio has also performed at Canadian festivals in Ottawa, Lanaudière, Quebec City, and Domaine Forget, and in Puerto Rico. The Trio has toured extensively in Europe, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Recent engagements include the Beethoven Fest Bonn, Berlin Konzerthaus, Hamburg Musikhalle, concerts across the United States and Canada, and a tour of South America’s major stages. Increasingly engaged in teaching, the Trio (violinist Wolfgang Redik, cellist Matthias Gredler and pianist Stefan Mendl) has given master classes in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Trio’s acclaimed recordings have won distinguished awards.
Le Wiener Klavier Trio
Fondé en 1988, le Wiener Klavier Trio est l’un des plus grands trios avec piano. Il a remporté de nombreux prix, étudié auprès de musiciens et d’ensembles prestigieux et longtemps participé à la série jeunesse du Musikverein (Vienne). En 2006, il lance sa propre série au Konzerthaus (Vienne). Le Trio s’est produit dans les grandes salles d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord : Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Wigmore Hall (Londres), Lincoln Center et Carnegie Hall (New York). Participant à d’importants festivals européens, il s’est aussi produit dans des festivals canadiens à Ottawa, à Lanaudière et au Domaine Forget ainsi qu’à Porto Rico. Le Trio a beaucoup joué en Europe, en Amérique du Nord et du Sud, en Australie, en Nouvelle-Zélande et au Japon. Il s’est récemment rendu au Beethoven Fest (Bonn), au Konzerthaus (Berlin) et au Musikhalle (Hambourg) et fait la tournée des grandes salles sudaméricaines. Lawrence Vine – horn
Lawrence Vine joined the National Arts Centre Orchestra as Principal Horn in 2002, after 11 seasons as principal horn with the Calgary Philharmonic, Winnipeg Symphony and Manitoba Chamber orchestras. A much sought-after chamber musician, he has collaborated with noted musicians such as Andrew Dawes, Lynn Harrell, Joseph Kalichstein, Anton Kuerti, Malcolm Lowe, Pascal Rogé, David Schifrin, Joseph Silverstein and Pinchas Zukerman. He regularly performs at home and on tour with the National Arts Centre Wind Quintet, a highly acclaimed ensemble that has recently recorded its debut CD. His festival credits include the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Banff Centre, Cleveland’s Kent/Blossom Music, and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. An active teacher and clinician, he was an instructor at the University of Manitoba, and has given master classes across North America. He also serves on the faculty of the National Arts Centre Summer Music Institute.
Lawrence Vine – cor
Lawrence Vine est cor solo de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 2002, après avoir occupé le même poste pendant onze saisons dans les orchestres philharmonique de Calgary, symphonique de Winnipeg et de chambre du Manitoba. Chambriste recherché, il a collaboré avec des musiciens réputés dont Andrew Dawes, Lynn Harrell, Joseph Kalichstein, Anton Kuerti, Malcolm Lowe, Pascal Rogé, David Schifrin, Joseph Silverstein et Pinchas Zukerman. Il joue souvent ici et en tournée avec le Quintette à vent du Centre national des Arts, ensemble réputé qui vient de graver un premier CD. Il a participé aux festivals de musique de chambre de Santa Fe, au festival d’été de Banff, au festival de musique Kent/Blossom de Cleveland et au Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa. Professeur et clinicien dynamique, il a enseigné à l’Université du Manitoba et donné des ateliers dirigés partout en Amérique du Nord. Il est aussi membre du corps enseignant de l’Institut de musique d’été du Centre national des Arts.
Les Voix Baroques
Les Voix Baroques is dedicated to historically informed performances of little known 16th, 17th and 18th century works for solo voices with or without instruments. Under programming directorship of countertenor Matthew White, the group has produced concert series at Montreal’s Christ Church Cathedral (2001-2005), toured the Prairie Provinces and Canada’s east coast, and produced an acclaimed staged oratorio in Berlin and Potsdam. Regularly collaborating with CBC/Radio-Canada, the group has performed, among others, at major Canadian festivals, Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio, and with Houston’s Mercury Baroque Ensemble in the CBC McGill Series in Montreal. Recent performance highlights include the Boston Early Music Festival’s concert series, Bach’s St. John Passion with Tafelmusik, and Bach Funeral Cantatas with Les Boréades de Montréal. In 2003, Les Voix Baroques’ fi rst CD, Elegeia, won the prestigious Cannes Classical Music Award for best new early music recital program. Subsequent recordings include Scarlatti solo cantatas and instrumental works (2005), Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri (2007) nominated for a JUNO award, and an acclaimed recording of settings of the Song of Songs texts directed by Stephen Stubbs (2008).
Les Voix Baroques
Les Voix Baroques spécialisent dans des oeuvres des 16e, 17e et 18e siècles pour voix en solo avec ou sans instruments. Sous la direction du haute-contre Matthew White, le groupe a produit une série de concerts à la Christ Church Cathedral (Montréal, 2001- 2005), fi t une tournée des Prairies et de la côte Est du Canada et a présenté un oratorio ovationné à Berlin et Postdam. Le groupe s’est produit aux principaux festivals canadiens, au Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio, et avec le Houston’s Mercury Baroque Ensemble dans la série CBC-McGill (Montréal). Leurs récents succès incluent la série de concerts du Boston Early Music Festival, la Passion selon St-Jean avec Tafelmusik, et les Cantates funèbres de Bach avec les Boréades. En 2003, Elegeia, leur premier CD gagna le fameux Prix de musique classique de Cannes (meilleur récital de musique ancienne). Leurs enregistrements subséquents comprennent les cantates en solo et les oeuvres instrumentales de Scarlatti (2005), Membra Jesu Nostri de Buxtehude (2007) en nomination pour un Juno, et un enregistrement applaudi de montage des textes Song of Songs sous la direction de Stephen Stubbs (2008).
