FAMILY FUN WITH FLUTES AND FANFARE
AND NOT JUST FOR KIDS!
Ottawa (July 20, 2007) Musicians tell us they are always seeking ways to encourage young children to take up a musical instrument. And at Chamberfest '07 we are equally keen to see new audiences at our events. So again this year, we have set aside five concerts specifically programmed to appeal to a younger generation: an adult programme for young minds, if you like.
First up on our YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERT series is Meet the Double Bass! (2 pm. July 23). This is an instrument that plays a huge role in the orchestra, the jazz combo and folk music. Hilda Cowie and Marjolaine Laroche show how a day without the double bass is, quite simply, "a day without sunshine."
July 25 (2 pm) sees Chamberfest '07 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Theatre, where the Ayorama Wind Quintet will play Serge Prokofiev's beloved introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. Marjolaine Laroche narrates the tale of Peter and the Wolf, while each character has a musical theme played by one of Ayorama's instruments.
Next in the series is Rhythmo-Synchro (2 pm. July 26), a guided improvisation for children based on hip-hop rhythms. The creation of self-styled synchro-percussionists Bruno Roy and Janic Gingras, each make their instruments resonate to the sounds of everyday life as heard in their travels. Their journey starts in Africa, with stopovers in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
Barocambolesque (Baroque'n'Roll) incorporates the music of Bach, Corelli and Poulenc played by Ensemble Caprice with baroque dance sequences from Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière. Complete with set and costumes, plus the adventures of a young dancer preparing for an audition, it's an event that has broad family appeal. (12 noon. July 27)
And finally, a show that will encourage struggling young musicians to practice just that little bit harder. The Junior Rising Stars Showcase (2 pm. July 30) features young talent aged between 8 and 18 playing flute, guitar, harp, trumpet and violin.
Watch for concerts tagged with the 'YP' logo. This means that up to three children under 12 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge to these events.
