"Assured musical intellect and compelling virtuosity." - Ensemble Magazin, Germany
Austria's celebrated moderntimes_1800 will perform for the first time in Ottawa on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (82 Kent Street at Wellington).
Convinced that the musical language of an era finds its most vivid expression when articulated by the musical means of the period, moderntimes_1800 uses the instruments and playing styles of the time in which a work was created.
Performing not only as an historical or modern chamber orchestra but also in smaller formations, moderntimes_1800's programme, entitled Bach and beyond..., will include two concertos by Bach performed on Baroque instruments and Schnittke's piano quintet performed on modern instruments.
As something external and strange, everything new appears poetic –
As something internal and of the self, everything old also appears romantic –
For both contrast with the commonplace – or with each other.
The newness of the old – the oldness of the new.
Novalis
