Masterclass: Isaac Chalk, viola
Chamberfest is thrilled to welcome Canadian violist Isaac Chalk for an inspiring masterclass with advanced viola students from the region. In this open, interactive session, Chalk works one-on-one with participants, offering insight into sound, style, phrasing, and the expressive possibilities of the viola.
Principal viola of Les Violons du Roy since 2013, Chalk brings a rich and wide-ranging musical background to his work as a performer and teacher. In addition to his training as an instrumentalist, he studied singing at the Maîtrise des Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal and worked extensively as a choral singer – experiences that continue to inform his lyrical and deeply vocal approach to string playing. A graduate of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and McGill University in Montréal, he is the recipient of McGill’s Golden Violin Award and Lloyd Carr-Harris String Scholarship.
Chalk has appeared as a soloist with Les Violons du Roy on many occasions, including in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Anthony Marwood and as viola d’amore soloist in the orchestra’s popular Vivaldissimo! project. His performances with the orchestra have taken him across Canada and abroad, as well as to major festivals including Lanaudière and Domaine Forget.
Join us for this free public masterclass and experience the artistry, curiosity, and generosity at the heart of musical mentorship.
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Isaac Chalk perform with Chamberfest Camerata on Saturday, August 1, and with Mélisande McNabney on Sunday, August 2 in Händel, Bach, and Sons.
