Sergio Emilio Parra

Sergio Emilio Parra (1993) is a Mexican pianist and composer, currently based in Ottawa, Canada. Parra studied the Pre-undergraduate Diploma and the Bachelor in Music: Performance Major program at University of Guadalajara, in Guadalajara, Mexico and obtained his MA: Music & Culture at Carleton University. In addition, Parra has taken a series of piano and composition masterclasses with renowned personalities including Lilya Zilberstein, Arturo Márquez, Stefano Gervasoni, Daniel Ott, Pierluigi Billone, Abdiel Vázquez and Jorge Federico Osorio, to name a few. He obtained the PECDA prize (distinction granted by the Mexican government as a recognition for cultural achievement and as a stimulus for artistic production) in 2015 and 2017, for his projects “Tatei-Kie: Eight Impressions of the Wixárika Easter” and “Aerial Soundscapes: Musical Homage to Dr. Atl.” As a pianist, he has collaborated with the chamber orchestra of the Universidad Autonóma de Guadalajara, has played as an accompanist for the Beckmann Foundation choir in Tequila, Mexico, and currently plays for The School of Dance, in Ottawa, Canada. Recently, Parra’s music has evolved towards an electroacoustic direction, implementing his Classical pianistic technique and experimental compositional resources, in addition to electronic music production and visual elements.
